BIRLA MUTUAL PLANS INFOTECH FORAY ON BACK OF APPLE

Mumbai, Dec 27 :     Birla Mutual Fund (BMF), which has acquired two schemes of Apple Mutual Fund, is restructuring them to invest in the booming information technology industry and multinational companies. Consequently, Apple Platinum Share will be relaunched as Birla IT Fund and Apple Midas Fund-The Gold Share will be rechristened as Birla MNC Fund. BMF officials said the structure of these funds is now being reorganised and their investment policy and fund management being recast. The restructuring of the schemes is expected to be complete by early next year. According to Bharat Shah, chief investment officer, Birla Mutual Fund, the infotech fund will seek to invest in equity and equity-related instruments of companies engaged in a wide range of existing and emerging infotech-related businesses. He added that the fund will invest in this industry with a maximum equity exposure of up to 100 per cent and maximum debt exposure of up to 20 per cent. The Birla MNC Fund will create a portfolio of shares of multinational companies. ?The fund will invest in MNC stocks run by visionary managements having capability to capitalise on multi-faceted opportunities that India provides,? he said. Birla Mutual Fund has decided to open both these schemes for fresh subscription in an initial special offer period from December 27 to January 31. Investors subscribing to the schemes during the period will be issued units at net asset value and without an entry load, BMF officials said. With the addition of these schemes, the total investor base of BMF is expected to be in excess of 25,000. The fund had acquired these two schemes for over Rs 1.25 crore. Speaking to reporters here today, Kumar Mangalam Birla, the chairman of the A.V. Birla group, said financial services has been identified as a core business area. He added that the mutual fund industry is witnessing ?new levels of maturity?. Currently, BMF manages assets worth Rs 3,750 crore. While the fund has been growing at the rate of 100 per cent in the past, it has clocked a 160 per cent growth rate this fiscal, he added.
