New Delhi, Sept. 13: The automobile industry has shown better results in August ? after reporting a drop in sales in June and July, car sales in the domestic market increased 14.8 per cent during the last month.
Automobile companies sold 72,165 vehicles during the period against 62,845 sold in the same month last year, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Normally the monsoon months of June and July are lean period for passenger car sales, which bounces back around the festive season.
Car sales in August were led by Hyundai Motors India, which recorded a 50 per cent jump. Market leader Maruti Udyog Ltd, however, registered a 12.39 per cent growth.
On the other hand, Tata Motors’s sales declined marginally in the compact and mid-size car segment. It sold 11,218 cars in August, down 3.38 per cent against 11,611 units a year ago.
Two-wheelers also registered higher sales at 7,08,214 units last month, up 17.91 per cent against 6,00,629 sold last year. The growth was fuelled by motorcycle sales, which increased 25 per cent. Market leader Hero Honda Motors set the standards by clocking a 27 per cent growth in sales at 2,38,104 units during the month against 1,87,265 units a year ago.
