Patna, June 29: Bihar BJP president Dr C.P. Thakur today said the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre is worse than the British government. He said the Congress does not have any concern for human values and peoples’ rights to protest peacefully in a democratic set-up.

Coming down heavily on the Congress ministers and leaders for allegedly threatening social activist Anna Hazare and yoga televangelist Baba Ramdev, who were waging a war against corruption.

“The Congress is behaving like an autocrat, which is trying to muzzle people’s rights of protesting in a peaceful manner in a democratic way,” Thakur said, adding that the Congress leaders and ministers are saying that Anna would meet the same fate as Ramdev, who was forcibly taken out of Delhi.

Hazare has announced that he would go on fast unto death after August 15 on the issue of comprehensive and meaningful Lokpal bill (ombudsman).

“It is unfortunate that a democratic government is talking like this. Going for fast or fast unto death or resorting to dharna are democratic ways to protest. The government’s job is not to threaten the people of the country. Its job should be confined only to keep a vigil,” Thakur said.

Terming the UPA government worse than the British, Thakur said: “Fasting, dharna, peaceful demonstrations are people’s rights in a democratic set up, which is appreciated by any government that cares for human values. But the Congress does not have much concern for them. It seems that the Congress does even not follow Mahatma Gandhi who had resorted to these rights during the British regime, which at least respected human values.”

The BJP state president said the party would go to the block and village levels to root out corruption.

Expressing concerns over the large number of scams that have unfolded in the past year, Thakur said the quantum of corruption has no limits. The government has not taken action against those who gave patronage to the 2G scam, he added.

On the Purnea Assembly bypoll outcome, Thakur expressed happiness on the result and thanked the people of the district for showing their solidarity with the party. He said: “The state government has been carrying out development work across the state and that is why the people of Purnea have made our candidate victorious with much more votes than the previous election.”

Thakur agreed that sympathy did have a role in the elections as it does across the country.
