Patna: A viral video showing three men molesting a Class VII student prompted police in Nalanda district to initiate action on Tuesday. While one of the men was arrested, the other two, including a man associated with the JDU, were still at large.
This is the fifth such clip in the state and the second one in Nalanda in the past two months. A spurt in incidents of rape and molestation in the past few months have left top officers posted at the police headquarters red-faced.
The latest incident happened under the jurisdiction of Chandi police station in Nalanda district, , around 60 km northeast of Patna.
The girl's family members told the police that the incident occurred in a house where she had gone to meet an acquaintance.
The young men who were already present in the house started molesting her and tried to rape her. She resisted. They filmed the act and later uploaded it online.
The girl's father, a farmer, lodged a complaint with the Chandi police station when he came to know about the video.
Three persons identified as Rajaram, Nandan Kumar and Pawan Kumar were named as accused in the FIR. Rajaram, sources said, is the Nagarnausa block unit president of the JDU's information-technology cell and son of Parvati Devi, sarpanch of Kailibigha panchayat. However, JDU district president Banaras Ram denied Rajaram was an office-bearer. The police arrested Nandan from Bodhibigha in Nalanda on Tuesday.
In the video, the girl is seen begging the men to spare her as they force her to sit between two of them and molest her. She somehow managed to escape and reached home, but she was too traumatised to tell her parents what had happened.
The family came to know after the video went viral on social media on Monday evening.
Chandi police station house officer (SHO) Mukesh Kumar said the accused have been booked under section 354 (B) of IPC, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offices Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
"Raids are on to nab the two remaining accused," said the SHO.
On June 13 this year, a similar video, of a 19-year-old being molested by a group of men when she was returning home after attending coaching classes, had surfaced from the Hilsa police station area in Nalanda.
The police had arrested the accused soon after the video went viral on social media.
