The Beur Central Jail administration has for the first time decided to organise a Twenty20 match between prisoners and prison officials.
To be played on Thursday, this is the first time that a cricket match has been organised on the jail premises.
The shortest format of the game would be played inside the jail as part of the state’s centenary year celebrations.
The names of the players and captains of the teams have been announced. Shahwaz, a gangster, will lead the prisoners, while jail superintendent Shivendra Priyadarshi has been chosen as his counterpart.
Pushkar, an undertrial facing charges of loot, extortion and attempt to murder, has been selected as the vice-captain of the prisoners’ team. Jailor Amarjeet would be Priyadarshi’s deputy. Priyadarshi said: “Officials act tough against inmates most of the time. But such events will bring prisoners and officials closer and help the administration know the inmates’ problems.”
A prisoner told The Telegraph: “The media often get news about brawls between prisoners and officials. But this would be a fight with a difference.”
Another prisoner said: “Imagine what it would be when someone from our team clobbers the jail superintendent or the jailor for a four or a six.”
The jail administration has also decided to organise a quiz show.
“The jail has been illuminated with blue bulbs to mark centenary celebrations,” Priyadarshi said, adding that delicacies would be served to the prisoners.
