People have started raising their voice in unison for the state's second All India Institute of Medical Sciences, announced in this year's Union budget, in Motihari.
A number of social organisations and NGOs like Bharat Sewak Samaj, Civil Society, Human Rights Violation Control Cell, Pensioner Samaj, Yog Mitra Mandal, Nirbhaya and Champaran Vikas Samiti have already written separate letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with logical reasons that why East Champaran is the fittest in north Bihar to have this super-speciality hospital.
According to Shobha Kant Choudhary, a retired professor and activist of Yoga Mitra Mandal, said the important places in north Bihar like Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Bettiah have already three medical colleges but Motihari has no such facility.
If this proposed AIIMS for north Bihar is established in Motihari, it would cater to the health requirements of over 50 lakh people in East Champaran, the second largest in population after Patna, said Human Rights Violation Control Cell state coordinator Gyaneshwar Gautam.
A large number of people belonging to neighbouring districts like Chhapra, Gopalganj, Siwan, Sheohar and Sitamarhi as well as those dwelling in bordering places of Nepal, would also be benefited from the proposed AIIMS, if this is set up in or around Motihari, Gautam added.
"The government may inquire at its own level regarding suitability of East Champaran for this proposed hospital in north Bihar. This would be a proper act of the government to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. Kathiawar in Gujarat was his janmbhoomi (birthplace) but Champaran was the only privileged place in north Bihar to become Gandhi's karmbhoomi (place of work)," said R.P. Sharma of Bharat Sewak Samaj.
According to Mamta Rani Verma, the district convener of Nirbhaya, this place is important also because Gandhi had started the Satyagraha movement from here
Besides, Champaran Vikas Samiti district president Rai Sunderdeo Sharma, leaders of 1974 students’ movement, and even activists of rival parties like Akhilesh Singh and Amit Tewari of the BJP, RJD’s Baccha Prasad Yadav, JDU district president Dinesh Prasad have also expressed their demand for an AIIMS in Motihari.
