Muzaffarpur: Hundreds of residents of Bela Chapra villa-ge under Bela police station stormed the 27th Shashtra Seema Bal (SSB) camp at Bela Industrial Estate following the death of a priest on Saturday.

Dilip Kumar Jha, 32, was found dead in mysterious circumstances outside a temple on Saturday morning.

The police said four SSB constables, including Sujit Kumar, had called Dilip at midnight and he was found dead outside the temple next morning. His family members alleged that Sujit Kumar, a driver with the SSB, had hatched a conspiracy involving three other SSB personnel to kill Dilip.

Angry family members and residents of the village decried the high-handedness of the SSB constables in intimidating the residents.

The residents staged violent protests over the death of the priest and pelted the SSB camp with stones to vent their anguish. The main gate of the camp was closed and partially damaged in the stone pelting.

Policemen from the Bela and Mithanpura police stations rushed to control the frenzied mob following the disturbances.

Rampaging residents of Bela Chapra village engaged in fisticuffs with the police while they were trying to pacify them.

Later the agitating residents kept Dilip's body outside the SSB camp and launched a protest.

They were demanding compensation and lodging of an FIR against the erring policemen. Later, Mithanpura police inspector B.K. Rai reached the spot and intervened and arranged to shift the body.

Family members of the dead were persuaded to shun the path of disturbance. Dilip's wife Puja Jha agreed to take the priest's body away after getting assurances from the SSP officials that she would be given Rs 4 lakh as compensation. Later, Dilip's body was sent to the SKMCH for autopsy and a named FIR was lodged against the Sujit Kumar, the SSB driver.
