Bailey Road hardly witnesses such rush of people at six in the morning, especially on a Sunday. But November 4 was different.
“There are so many diversions. I started from the Boring Road and have been stopped at the Income Tax Roundabout. I was asked to take the Beer Chand Patel Marg but that road was also packed with men. I need to reach the SP Verma Road but cannot find a way. There are cops but it seems that they are not from Patna and hence don’t have an idea about the roads,” Girish Kumar, a shopkeeper said as he looked perplexed sitting on his two-wheeler and trying to guess a way out.
By 8am, all the roads were jam-packed. Dal supporters took them over.
At Bailey Road, Gandhi caps with Nitish Kumar printed on one side were being distributed among party workers. The other side of the cap had the name of Kaushal Yadav, an MLA from Govindpur in Nawada district.
The queue for caps started from the centre of the road. Nobody appeared bothered about commuters. “We are waiting for more people to join and each one of them will be given these caps,” a party member on the road said proudly.
The scene at the Station Road was no different. Forty-year-old Ravi Kumar Singh stood still on one corner of the street as he saw a sea of people moving towards Frazer Road from Dakbungalow roundabout. “How am I supposed to reach the Biscomaun area? I have no clue,” the shopkeeper muttered before heading home.
At the Income Tax roundabout, many two-wheeler riders were seen asking the policemen about alternative routes. Near the JP roundabout, Birender Dayal (63) and his wife stood shivering. “We have to go to the PMCH. Please tell us how to go?” they asked.
On learning that they have to go on foot as the public vehicles were not plying, his wife didn’t look pleased at all. “We are old. How do we go?” she said as the couple started walking slowly matching steps with the rally enthusiasts.
Going to the station was an uphill task. People with confirmed tickets had nervous times waiting on roads. “I have to reach the railway station and have somehow got this rickshaw from Punaichak. After a ride of almost an hour-and-a-half, I have reached Beer Chand Patel Marg,” Avinash Singh, on way to Odisha, said.
