Central University of Bihar (CUB) administration would write to science and technology department seeking additional space from Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Patna.

CUB has sought 20,000sqft of 30,000sqft of unused constructed space of BIT from the latter. The varsity has been struggling to conduct classes because of space crunch. It has already deferred the commencement of its academic session from August 1 to August 21.

The central varsity has been functioning from the premises of BIT-Patna and it conducts 16 masters degree courses.

Sources said in mid-July, a team of senior officials from the department of science and technology visited BIT campus and asked its administration to provide a detailed project report of the space required for its expansion and of its unutilised constructed space so that it could be provided to CUB. However, no action has been taken.

CUB vice-chancellor Janak Pandey said: “The space crunch has affected us in starting our academic session on time. But we have limitations and have to work with them.”

At the inauguration of bachelor of architecture course at BIT-Patna on Saturday chief minister Nitish Kumar had said: “The issue of two central universities in Gaya and Motihari has been settled but it takes time to settle down things. Till everything is on track, BIT should provide extra space to CUB so that it can function smoothly.”
