Darbhanga, June 11: Suspected Indian Mujahideen operative Qateel Siddiqui’s kin on Monday sought a CBI inquiry into his death in a special cell of Yerawada Central Jail in Pune.

Qateel, who was allegedly involved in the 2010 German Bakery blast in Pune and the Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore, died on June 8 inside the cell. The post-mortem report confirmed his death of asphyxia. The Pune police are investigating the death and the report is awaited.

On Monday, his last rites were performed at his native village in Darbhanga. Hundreds of people gathered for Qateel’s cremation at Badh Samaila village under Keoti police station. His body was brought home from Pune on Sunday night amid tight security.

His relatives demanded a CBI inquiry into the death of the 27-year-old youth, who was arrested by Delhi police in November, 2011. Before his alleged involvement in terror activities, he used to work as a plumber.

Mohammad Sakir Siddiqui, Quateel’s brother, told The Telegraph: “He was lodged in the special cell of Yerawada Central Jail. How was did he die there? There must be a CBI inquiry into his death.”

He added: “Had it not been for some people in Pune and Mumbai, who arranged for the airfare, my brother’s body would never have arrived home. We did not get any support from the Bihar government.”

Quateel’s father, Mohammad Zakir Siddiqui, said: “I was shocked to know that a man could be killed in prison. My son was innocent. If he was involved in any terror activity, he would have been punished by the court. We want to know what kind of justice is this.”
