The civic body is all set to table a surplus budget for the next fiscal for the first time in seven years.

The draft of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s budget with a meagre surplus of Rs 60,014 would be tabled in the meeting of its empowered standing committee on Friday. If approved by standing committee members, the budget would be presented in the meeting of the PMC board scheduled for March 15.

“The draft of the budget for the 2014-15 fiscal has been circulated among the members of the empowered standing committee. It would be tabled in its meeting to be held tomorrow (Friday). This year’s budget has been made with a perspective of holistic development of the city with quality civic services to the residents. We have made a surplus budget this year because we expect higher revenue through various sources as compared to the previous years,” said a senior officer of PMC.

The civic body presented deficit budget for six consecutive years. It registered marginal profit of Rs 14 crore in 2006-07.

The surplus in the budget for the financial year 2014-15 has been attributed to the expected increase in revenue of the civic body through tax collection from hoardings (advertisements) and cellphone service providers’ towers among others. The PMC could not mop up revenue from them over the past few years because of various litigations, most of which have been disposed of now.

The city residents can expect illuminated streets, functional traffic signals, and more parks and trees, in the next fiscal because the civic body has decided to spend substantial amount on them. Rs 45 lakh has been set aside for developing a women’s room/hall at in the PMC office.

Considering the acute crisis of drinking water, the civic body would be installing two hand-pumps in each ward.

Barring 2006-07, the civic body has been running in losses for over a decade. It had tabled a deficit budget of around Rs 28 crore for the ongoing financial year (2013-14).
