Patna University students’ protest rolled into its third consecutive day on Friday demanding hostel allotment for the undergraduates of Patna College.
In agitation against the university directive, the students of Patna University (PU) staged a Raj Bhavan march from the college campus.
They were however, stopped by police near Dakbungalow roundabout. Their main demands were allotment of hostels, rollback of the Rs 50 fine for bunking classes and putting a cap on the 12-year period to complete studies.
PU has asked the students to either study without accommodations or leave the college.
Dean, students’ welfare, K.N. Paswan had said it was not necessary that not undergraduates studying at college get accommodation facilities. Only 10 per cent of the total number live in hostels.
The university administration, has cited that renovation work was the reason for not allotting hostels. On the other hand, students claimed that the restoration of the hostels could have easily been completed during the summer vacation.
Santosh Kumar, a third-year geography student, said: “We were leading a peaceful march to Raj Bhavan with our five-point charter of demands. When we reached Dakbungalow roundabout, the police tried to stop us and even beat up some of us.”
