Patna, Jan. 31: A group of BN College students clashed with the owner of a fast food stall near Kargil Chowk under Gandhi Maidan police station yesterday.

The students allegedly ransacked the stall and then blocked the road.

Trouble started when a student, Rashid, assaulted another student, Sumit over some disagreement. Sumit and two of his friends lodged an FIR at the Gandhi Maidan police station. Later in the evening, they met Sonu, the owner of the fast food stall and a friend of Rashid.

An altercation ensued and Sonu’s friends beat up Sumit and his two friends.

The situation soon spun out of control, as students of the college, enraged after learning of the attack on their fellow students, ransacked Sonu’s stall. They also allegedly blocked traffic on the road, smashed the windscreens of a few cars and got into fights with the motorists.

Sonu was arrested and the police are looking for Rashid and others involved in the brawl, said a police officer.

A source said though the students were not responsible for initiating the trouble this time, they have often been involved in clashes with residents in different parts of the city. The police are clueless about how to rein in the rowdy students.

“Students, especially boarders of Minto, Jackson and Iqbal hostels, often get into clashes with the residents over trivial issues,” said a police officer.

University authorities claim they can do nothing without help of the police. Patna University pro-vice-chancellor S.I. Ahson had earlier told The Telegraph that those residing illegally in the hostels often caused trouble.

Hostel superintendents had been asked to prepare a list of such lodgers. But the lists have not yet been submitted.
