Police are mulling a campaign against drink driving despite its 20 breathanalysers lying defunct. However, for the campaign, the police have taken the traditional route to check revellers steering out of control.

Patna traffic superintendent of police Chandrika Prasad said from April those engaging in drink driving will have to face the music. Prasad added that a drive against traffic violations, concentrating on areas through which vehicles enter the state capital is on. It will continue till March 16.

The officer added that there are problems with the breathanalysers but that would not stop the police to start the crusade against drink driving.

“We are planning to start a massive crusade against drink driving in April. We are working on the minute details of the plan. It would be carried out in the evening and in the night,” Prasad said.

On how they plan to carry out the drive without the breathanalysers, a traffic officer said they would apply standard techniques to gauge how drunk a person is.

“Anyone can tell whether a person is drunk or not. A person could be asked to walk on a straight line or read out a few lines from a paper. We will notice the accent to know how much the person is drunk. Since the marriage season starts in April, we are sure to find a few revellers at the wheel,” the officer said.

A word of caution: Any person under the influence of alcohol, driving or attempting to drive a motor vehicle with the alcohol level exceeding 30mg per 100ml of blood detected by a breathanalyser is punishable for the first offence with imprisonment for a term that may extend up to six months or a fine up to Rs 2,000 or both.
