A fire broke out in an electronic goods store on the first-floor of Pushpanjali Complex in the Boring road area on Sunday afternoon, scaring flat residents on the upper floors.
Two floors of the building are for commercial use. The residents of the remaining four — used for residential purpose — rushed out as smoke billowed out of the store.
Around 2.30pm, the blaze was spotted in the godown of Swagat Interiors Private Limited on the first floor of the building. The flames also engulfed its showroom on the same floor. There was, however, no casualty.
Prakash Kumar, a resident of the six-storeyed building, said he came to know of the blaze when smoke started billowing from the first floor around 2.30pm.
“I was taking a rest with my family. There was a commotion and people started running out of their flats to protect themselves,” he said.
Prakash, whose office is on the second floor, said the residents evacuated their flats after the flames engulfed the second-floor. Sources said there was also a fear of cylinder blasts. Most of the shops were closed, as it was a Sunday. However, on receiving information about the fire, the shop owners rushed to the site.
Four fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames and it took almost an hour to bring the situation under control.
Sanjay Kumar, the president of Boring Road Vyapari Sangh, said the tenders took 45 minutes to reach the spot after receiving information. He, however, blamed the chaotic traffic for the delay.
A fire personnel said a short circuit could have triggered the fire.
“Had the fire tenders not reached the spot on time, the other shops could have been damaged as most of them were closed,” he said, adding that the fire personnel had to cut the windowpanes to enter the electronic goods store. He said the loss of property was yet to be estimated.
