Samastipur: One Mahadev Sahani (60) was on Wednesday produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate Shivanand Mishra, who remanded him in 14 days of judicial custody.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of excise department led by sub-inspector Shailendra Kumar on Tuesday night conducted a raid at Chakmotipur under Tajpur police station, about 80km northeast of Patna, and arrested Sahani (60). The officials also seized 5,380 litres of spirit stored for making spurious liquor. Four persons — Amresh Singh, Kamlesh Singh, Amar Singh and Shambhu Singh — managed to escape.

Poll plans in prison

Siwan: Former MP Prabhunath Singh along with his supporters on Wednesday met former MP Md Shahabuddin in Siwan jail. The meeting continued for an hour and a half. Later Prabhunath said strategies regarding the by-election of the Maharajganj parliamentary constituency were discussed.

Teacher hiring

Patna: The education department on Wednesday lifted its ban on the distribution of appointment letters to candidates, selected through Secondary Teachers Eligibility Test, who will be hired as teachers in government high schools. The appointment letters have to be sent by April 15. Around 17,500 candidates will be appointed as teachers.

Deadly assault

Gopalganj: One Sri Ram Sharma (65) was beaten to death following a land dispute at Barari Jagdish village under the jurisdiction of Uchkagaon police station on Tuesday evening. Sri Ram Sharma had arranged materials for construction of his house. But villager Ram Babu came with his men and asked him to remove materials from the land. When Sharma insisted that the land belonged to him, Ram Babu and his men assaulted him. Sharma succumbed to injury while on the way to hospital. An FIR was lodged by Sharma’s son Amarjit against Ram Babu and twelve others. One of the accused, Santosh Sharma, has been arrested. Police said that raids were on to arrest others.

Cricket match

Patna: Bhagalpur defeated Gaya by 41 runs in the final match of Vaastu Vihar Champions Trophy 2013 organised by Association of Bihar Cricket. The match was played at Moinul Haque Stadium. Batting first, Bhagalpur got all out scoring 199 runs in 38.2 overs. Gaya was bowled out for 158 runs in 30.2 overs.

Accident

Sasaram: An 80-year-old man, Awadhesh Singh, was crushed to death by a truck under the jurisdiction of Akaurigola police station in Rohtas district on Wednesday. The driver of the truck, identified as Mithilesh Choudhary, was arrested and the vehicle was seized.

Idol recovered

Gazipur (UP) (PTI): Seven people were on Wednesday arrested and an 250-year-old ashtdhatu (alloy of eight metals) idol worth about Rs 1.75 crore, which was stolen from Kaimur district Bihar in February, was seized from them, police said.
