Shreyasi Singh has set her eyes on the “trap”, as rest of the state is waiting with bated breath for her success in the Commonwealth Games shooting event.

The 20th Commonwealth Games started in Glasgow, Scotland, on Wednesday.

Of the 215-strong Indian contingent across various disciplines (the second largest ever) Shreyasi is the only sportsperson with roots in Bihar. She is the daughter of former Union minister late Digvijay Singh and former Banka MP Putul Devi.

Total 31 shooters from India are taking part in the Games but 22-year-old Shreyasi is the only female representing the country in the sport. Shreyasi is participating in two trapshooting events — single trap and double trap. Shreyasi would lead the Indian challenge women’s double trap event this Sunday (July 27) at Barry Buddon Shooting Centre, located in Carnoustie on Scotland’s beautiful east coast. She would also be participating in the women’s trap event at the same shooting centre on Monday (July 28).

In the single trapshooting, a target is thrown into the air at varied angles from a spring device called as a “trap”. In double trapshooting, two targets are released at the same time, and the shooter has to fire one shot each. The gun used is usually a double-barrel 12-gauge (bore) shotgun.

Born in Delhi, Shreyasi left for Glasgow last week and she is accompanied by her mother Putul. About Shreyasi’s interest in shooting, her elder sister Mansi Singh told The Telegraph: “Though we have a rich family background in shooting but Shreyasi started pursuing the game more seriously after our father introduced her to Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who had won a silver medal in men’s double-trap in 2004 Athens Olympics.”

Shreyasi has done her schooling from Delhi Public School, RK Puram, and graduation from Hansraj College in Delhi University.

Shreyasi’s grandfather late Hari Shri as well as her father late Digvijay Singh have been presidents of National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). “Shreyasi entered into professional trapshooting from 2007 and she won the gold medal in the junior single trap event in national shooting competition in 2008. Her world-ranking in women’s trap is 18th at present,” said Mansi.

Sources claimed that Shreyasi had won gold medal in junior single trap competition in Finland in 2009. She had also reached till the finals in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 but could not win. She won gold in women’s double-trap competition in national shooting championship in 2012 and 2013 as well.

“Shreyasi recently participated in the ISSF World Cup held in Beijing earlier this month,” said Mansi. Shreyasi stood 25th among 29 shooters competing in women’s trap at ISSF World Cup in Beijing.
