Seat hike proposal on PU table

Patna, May 31: A proposal to increase the seats in Patna Science College and Patna Women’s College was tabled at the Patna University syndicate meeting today.

Syndicate members raised the issue of increasing seats in Patna Science College from 400 to 600 for the undergraduate first-year courses in all streams. It was also proposed in the meeting that seats should be increased at Patna Women’s College from 200 to 350 in undergraduate courses.

Patna University syndicate meeting started with its members raising the issue of corruption in the ongoing construction work at the university.

Raising the issue, syndicate member Sudhakar Prasad Singh said: “A series of construction and renovation works have been carried out at many colleges and hostels of the university, in which there have been cases of huge financial irregularities. However, no action has been taken by the university administration.”

Singh also: “The committee formed to inquire about the financial irregularities is yet to submit its report.”

He added: “The financial irregularities in construction and renovation of colleges and hostels was also raised in the meeting.”

He said for the fiscals 2009-10 and 2010-11, the university received Rs 150 crore for its building modernisation and renovation but few renovation works had been done.

Singh also raised the issue of removal of present examination controller D.N. Sharma.

Singh said: “The present examination controller has failed to deliver. So he should be removed immediately from his duty.”

Altogether 14 agendas were raised at the syndicate meeting, including promotion for teachers and re-instatement of suspended employees.

The syndicate members decided that the Patna University Central Library would remain open only for 12 hours from 7am to 7pm, despite protests from the students’ bodies.

Raising the issue of re-instatement of suspended teachers, syndicate members said that P.C. Verma and Asim Lal Chakarborty, who were suspended by the university, should be reinstated like Jyoti Shekar who was reinstated a few months back.

The retirement dues of the teachers were also discussed at the meeting.
