Muzaffarpur, Aug. 9: The railway ministry is working over a plan to revive Bharat Wagon at Muzaffarpur.
The railway is considering a special package of Rs 81 crore to restart the unit, an undertaking of the ministry. The plan is in its final stage.
Sources said 23 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, headed by Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha MP Jai Narayan Nishad, met then railway minister Mamata Banerjee in March to accord a special package to Bharat Wagon. Consequently, Bharat Wagon forwarded a proposal of Rs 81.19 crore to the railway board for its approval.
Nishad told The Telegraph over phone from Delhi: “At present, the unit at Muzaffarpur is devoid of necessary infrastructure to build wagons. The unit is hardly able to build even 10 bogies a year. Employees of the unit have not been paid their salaries for more than two years.”
He said the MPs would meet the Prime Minister and seek his direct intervention if the special package is not provided. “In case the package is allowed, Bharat Wagon would be able to construct more than 60 bogies every year,” the MP added.
Earlier, members of Bharat Wagon Kamgar Union had met Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar and requested her to save the unit. The employees said the central government is treating Bharat Wagon in a step-motherly manner.
Thereafter, the managing director of Bharat Wagon, Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, sent a detailed project report to the railway ministry in April. However, the Railway Board has agreed to facilitate Rs 15 crore as a working capital, Rs 20 crore for payment of salaries to the employees and for other dues.
