Muzaffarpur, April 25: A protest of the civic body employees’ union over implementation of Sixth Pay Commission recommendations turned ugly today when a few protesters tried to manhandle the mayor and deputy mayor of the district municipal corporation.
Mayor Bimla Devi Tulsiyan and deputy mayor Mohammad Nisaruddin were attending a meeting of the civic body when around 480 members of Kamgar Union barged into the premises and started raising slogans against the civic authorities.
Member of Rajya Sabha Anil Sahni, Muzaffarpur town MLA Suresh Sharma, Kanti Assembly MLA Ajit Kumar, MLC Ganesh Bharti and all 28 ward councillors were present at the meeting. Secretary of Kamgar Union Rameshwar Rai, along with the other members, soon got into a heated exchange with Tulsiyan and Nisaruddin. They threatened the mayor and the deputy mayor to immediately issue an order or they would disrupt the business of the board.
MLA Suresh Sharma tried to broker peace at the meeting but failed as the civic body employees turned down his intervention and remained firm on their demand for immediate implementation of pay panel recommendations. Sharma told The Telegraph that the board could somehow managed to approve the plan for immediate repair of defunct high mast lights in the city. There are 45 high mast lights in the city of which 35 are out of order and need immediate repair.
The board hurriedly completed the formalities of handing over the maintenance responsibility of the lights to a private electrical company.
Nisaruddin later convened a news meet and decried the misconduct of the civic employees.
