The alumni association of St Xavier’s College of Education organised an inter-school elocution contest on Saturday, August 24.

Fifteen schools, including Hartman Girls’ High School, St Xavier’s High School, St Michael’s High School, Loyola High School and Notre Dame Academy, took part.

“This contest aimed to prepare the students for their professional lives by helping them develop skills and abilities, overcoming fear of crowds and providing them with real world experience,” said college principal Thomas Perumalil S.J.

Deep Kumar, secretary, alumni association, proposed the vote of thanks.

Classroom climate

A two-day workshop on the most effective way to teach morality to students without imparting moral education lessons was organised at St Xavier’s College of Education, Patna, from August 16. The event was organised for the BEd department.

Principal Thomas Perumalil S.J. introduced the topic to the students on the opening day of the workshop. Other speakers dealt with ways to teach students a subject related to experience so that they can reflect and later act on it.

Teachers should not be concerned with the subject but with creating an atmosphere where students are taught morality with value inputs.

Faculty member Preeti Sinha also presented a “classroom climate” at the two-day workshop in which she advised how teachers should take care of the physical environment in a class. She said teachers should know their students by name, not be sarcastic, be active and attend to their needs.

I-Day service

Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Patna, celebrated Independence Day this year in the spirit of service.

The institute’s National Service Scheme unit organised a blood donation camp and a mega health camp in association with Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and Indian Society of Gastroenterology (Bihar and Jharkhand chapter), respectively.

Around 150 students, including BIT-Patna faculty members, donated blood to the PMCH blood bank.

The day started with the National Anthem.

Dr U.P. Sinha, in-charge, PMCH blood bank, who was present at the health camp termed it a big success. Ten specialists attended to more than 125 people.

Rain dance

Patna Women’s College organised a Shravani dance competition on its premises on August 14 in celebration of monsoon.

Eighty-five students from the college’s different departments took part in the competition in which the participants were addressed by codes.

One of the organisers said: “The participant’s identity was not disclosed and were called on stage by a number. Every year we organise a competition like this so that results are impartial.”

College principal Doris D’Souza applauded her students. Some of the participants came dressed to fit the monsoon theme — in bright green outfits with matching accessories.

Green event

Magadh Mahila College, JD Women’s College and Ganga Devi College organised different Saawan meets on August 17.

Students of JD Women’s College presented a short cultural programme at the institution with some of them performing kajari songs to add to the magic of the event.

College principal Usha Singh and Digha MLA Poonam Singh enjoyed on the swing, a special attraction of the programme.

A group dance competition to celebrate monsoon was organised at Magadh Mahila College, while at Ganga Devi, teachers and students came dressed in green saris to honour the event’s theme.

The students were conferred titles such as Miss Saawan, Miss Confident and Miss Delicate.
