Patna: A sharp needle, hydrogen peroxide, some cotton and a pair of pincers comprise the primary equipment of one particular trade. The distinguishing trademark of these professionals is that they store these equipment in a red cap/hat, especially those who live in Mumbai. Can you guess the profession?
Indian spinners enjoyed the Kanpur Green Park pitch in the late 1950s. In December 1959, Jasubhai Patel achieved the mark. His off-spin exploited a newly-laid turf pitch to help win a match. Subhash "Fergie" Gupte had achieved the same mark exactly a year earlier and at the same ground. Kapil Dev also achieved the mark in 1983. What feat connects Patel, Gupte and Kapil and whose achievements, around two decades ago, bested them?
The first question's answer is ear cleaners, while the answer to the second is nine wickets in an innings that was taken by Anil Kumble.
Such interesting questions were asked in the India Quiz organised at the Patna Mind Fest, 2018, at Bihar Museum on Saturday. The civil society initiative, Extra C, in collaboration with the IAS Officers' Association and Axis Bank organised the two-day Patna Mind Fest, 2018, which got underway on Saturday. The event is different as it has a combination of events, including quizzing, cryptic crossword, word bee and dumb charades.
So far as India Quiz is concerned, which was organised on the inaugural day of the two-day fest, quizzers had to answer questions pertaining to different areas including social, cultural, political and other aspects of the country and it was conducted by quizmaster and co-founder of Bangalore-based Nexus Consulting Venky Srinivasan.
An interesting aspect of the quiz was that it allowed people to team up with others and coin the name of the team. Each team could have a maximum of three members.
H2, the team of Harjot and Hardeep, won the India Quiz while team Cola represented by Alok took second position. Team Platinum Three comprising Jyotiradhitya Goswami, Anand and Akshay Kumar bagged the third place. As many as 40 teams had registered for the quiz which was an open event.
After a writing elimination round, the teams qualified for the onstage final. By virtue of being only team to have been selected in the final round, Platinum Three also won the Best School Team Rank. The team members were from St Karen's School, Danapur.
Harjot, a member of the winning team, said he enjoyed participating in the quiz. "The questions were fascinating and the way the quizmaster put them up was even more interesting. The questions were elaborate and I found the quiz very informative," he said.
The second day of the fest will have events such as word bee final, a cryptic crossword competition and a general quiz. The prize distribution ceremony would be organised at the same venue on Sunday.
