Patna: The Patna University Students' Union election will be held in the last week of November or first week of December.
The Patna University administration convened a meeting with different student leaders (unelected) on Thursday evening to assure them that the PU administration was interested in holding students union elections.
Patna University vice-chancellor Rash Bihari Prasad Singh chaired the meeting.
"The Patna University administration is interested in holding students union elections in the larger interest of students," Rash Bihari said. "The election will be held either in the last week of November or the first week of December."
The VC also said that if due to some technical problems or unwanted reasons, the university cannot hold elections by the first week of December, the university will hold students union elections by the first week of January.
The VC assured the students' delegation that as directed by the chancellor's office, he will prepare the draft of the student's union elections within 10 days and send it to Raj Bhavan for final approval.
The chancellor's office has constituted a three-member committee led by the Patna University VC to frame a uniform draft for students' union election in all state universities.
The other members of the committee are Jai Prakash University, Chhapra, VC Professor Harikesh Singh and Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU), Darbhanga, VC, Professor S.K. Singh. The draft proposal for students' union election will be framed as per the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines.
Once the chancellor's office gives its nod for a new draft proposal for students' union elections, the PU administration will issue dates for holding them.
If the Patna University conducts students' union election this year, it will be held after a gap of nearly five years. The last student's union election was held in 2012 after a gap of nearly 28 years.
The 2012 election consisted of five key posts - president, vice-president, general secretary, secretary and treasurer. There were also executive council posts for different colleges and post-graduate departments. Sources said this time, too, the university will follow the same pattern.
The students are happy with PU's decision. Sanjeev Sardar, a student leader, demanded reservation for girls' students in the students' union election.
