Patna, Sept. 5: A probe into the alleged police inaction leading to the suicide of a college student in Sitamarhi last month started today.

Inspector-general of police Shobha Ohatker today visited Harsinghpur, the native village of Kanchanbala in Sitamarhi district, to speak to her family. Twenty-one-year-old Kanchanbala had committed suicide on August 23 at her rented home at Dumra in Sitamarhi town, around 170km north of Patna, after the police allegedly took no action against an employee of the Sitamarhi collectorate for harassing her for two years.

Ohatker, who returned from deputation in Maharashtra last month, recorded the statements of the victim’s mother Nisha Jha, father Udaykant Jha and two brothers Vikas and Manish.

Her parents complained against the then station house officer of Dumra police station, a sub-inspector of police and the superintendent of police for not taking prompt action in the complaint lodged against Kanchanbala’s tormentor.

Ohakter also met police officers concerned and inquired about the incident. She, however, refused to divulge details of the incident to the media. “I have come here for investigation on the directive of state police chief Abhayanand, ” she said.
