Patna: Bihar is all set to achieve cent per cent household electrification work, which is one of the seven resolves of the state government, well before the December 31 deadline.

According to the latest figures available with the Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), the household electrification work has been completed in 23 out of 38 districts and nine more districts are set to join the list of such districts by the end of the current month.

Districts where household electrification work have been completed are Supaul, Kishanganj, Purnea, Gopalganj, Siwan, Sheohar, Madhubani, Araria, Saharsa, Madhepura, Khagaria, Begusarai, West Champaran which fall under the jurisdiction of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (NBPDCL) and Bhojpur, Buxar, Nalanda, Nawada, Arwal, Aurangabad, Gaya, Jamui, Munger and Sheikhpura which fall under the jurisdiction of South Bihar power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL).

The NBPDCL and SBPDCL have been given the responsibility of executing the household electrification scheme in their respective areas of jurisdiction. The scheme is part of the seven resolves of the state government which chief minister Nitish Kumar had announced ahead of the 2015 Assembly elections. The state government launched the scheme in November 2016 and later when the central government came up with a similar scheme in September 2017, the state's scheme was subsumed in the central scheme named Saubhagya.

The two power distribution companies limited have been asked to complete the work in nine more districts by the end of September. While SBPDCL has been asked to complete the work in Jehanabad, Banka, Lakhisarai, Patna and Rohtas in the current month, in case of NBPDCL, the September target entails the districts of Katihar, Darbhanga, Samastipur and East Champaran.

"The power company bosses are aiming to complete the work in October itself during which six more districts - Bhagalpur and Kaimur in south Bihar and Sitamarhi, Muzaffarpur, Saran and Vaishali in north Bihar - would be covered. Going by the current pace of work the work is expected to be completed in October itself," a senior official of BSPHCL told The Telegraph.

He, however, maintained that in a bid to ensure that not a single household, which wanted to have power connection, remained left out of this scheme, the power company was also seeking feedback from people's representatives as well as the district administration on this front.

"Our aim is to complete the work in October and after cross-checking the work on the ground, a formal announcement is expected to be made in November, which would be well in advance of the December deadline given to the state government for completing the household electrification work," added the official.
