Patna, July 4: Police recruits, waiting for their appointment, today posed a security threat for the lawmakers in the state capital.
Police assistance was sought to control a strong crowd of aspiring policemen who staged a protest against the government in front of the Vidhan Sabha gate.
The area, considered a high-security zone with Section 144 always in place, exposed the chinks in the city police’s alertness.
Senior police officers had to rush to the spot to control the situation.
The protestors, around 200 in number, demanded they should be recruited immediately into the state police constable force.
They sneaked into the Vidhan Sabha area in small groups and started to raise slogans. Many even sat in front of the gate until the police arrived.
“The notification regarding the constable recruitment was made in 2002 and a total of 10,156 people were to be recruited as constables. The written examinations with regard to the same ultimately took place on May 1, 2010. The physical examination took place between September and October in the same year. The merit list was published on January 1 this year and the first batch of 2,228 men were asked to join. The problem started when those people whose names were not in the merit list lodged a case in Patna High Court. As a result, everything came to a dead stop. On May 2, 2011, the high court reserved its decision. Now, we don’t know what to do,” the protestors said.
On June 29, the same people had staged a protest at R-Block of the capital. The protestors alleged the police officers misbehaved with them.
“The policemen were threatening us that we will be beaten up. We are protesting peacefully. We want the state government to intervene in the matter. We have been waiting since a long time now and a decision should be taken,” they said.
City superintendent of police Shivdeep Lande also reached the spot and had a talk with the protestors.
“We were told by him that Section 144 is in place here and therefore it is illegal to hold a protest at this spot. But he assured us that no FIRs will be lodged aginst us,” they added.
