Patna, May 6: The state police have discovered a huge monetary transaction from the bank account of Varanasi Subramaniam, one of the three central committee members of CPI (Maoist), arrested from Katihar district on Saturday.
The money was used allegedly to finance Naxalite activities in the Maoist-affected states.
During investigations, it came to light that Subramaniam had transferred huge amount to Maoists in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from his account with State Bank of Mysore.
Officials associated with the investigation said Subramaniam had opened an account with Nehru Place branch of State Bank of Mysore and mentioned JNU campus as his address. Subramaniam, according to police, was in-charge of urban sub-committee of the outfit since 2007 and looked after activities in Delhi, Calcutta and Mumbai.
Inspector-general (operation) K.S. Dwivedi said anti-terror squad of the UP police raided Shastri Nagar residence of Subramaniam in Meerut on May 2 and seized passbooks, compact discs and letters related to the organisation.
“We are yet to get the details of the transaction from Subramaniam’s bank account,” he said, adding that the Katihar police have been assigned to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Dwivedi said he contacted the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) officials on the requisition of the Katihar police.
When contacted, Katihar superintendent of police (SP) P. Kannan, who is monitoring the investigation into the case related to the arrest of the six Maoists, including three central committee members, said he was yet to get the copy of the confessional statement of the arrested Maoists.
Sources said Rs 40 lakh has been deposited in Subramaniam’s account in the past one-and-a-half years and subsequently transferred in different bank accounts in Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.
