Penalty for violating traffic rules on Gandhi Setu and its approaching roads would be strictly followed like never before.

Traffic superintendent of police P.K. Das said the regulations - mainly centre around proper lane driving and no overtaking - would be strictly implemented so that no violator is spared under any circumstances.

Police sources told The Telegraph that a penalty, ranging between Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 are waiting for any vehicles, which try to overtake the other while passing through the bridge.

"They will be fined heavily. After a lot of research, the police have been able to create a system aimed at smoothening traffic in and around the bridge and we want it to stay intact. The new system is indeed effective but we have to keep in mind unusual situation, too. The stress is mainly on lane driving while approaching the bridge from all sides and any vehicles violating the same will not be spared under any circumstances. Each and every document of the violating vehicle will be checked and the penalty will just flow in. No vehicle, which is caught violating or acting smart, will be spared," he said.

Around 10 days ago, the officer said vehicles moving in Patna and also on the bridge would not to be stopped or penalised even if they violate traffic regulations in the peak hours mainly to avoid jams.

However, he said on Wednesday the violators could also face cancellation of permits.

"Things can only improve in and around the bridge if the vehicles, especially those heavy ones, follow lane driving. The police, within a couple of days, will put up signs and information boards at different places so that the drivers know what is to be done. Also, the deployment is getting heavy and the cops on the field will regulate them according to the plan. One violating vehicle can result in a cascading effect with the whole system failing. So, strict action is needed at this point of time. Apart from levying heavy fines, the vehicles can also be impounded with permanent cancellation of permits if they tend to violate the regulations. The police will ensure that the vehicles are not stranded forever," the officer added.

"Lane driving means no overtaking. Overtaking in the bridge is criminal at this point of time. Any vehicle caught doing so will either be penalised heavily or their permits will be cancelled forever. However, the police will keep in mind the clogging aspect too but then violating vehicles cannot be let off all the time at any point of time. Things at the bridge in the Patna side are improving and the police want it to remain the same," another police officer said.
