The dawn-to-dusk bandh call given by the political parties and social organisations against the alleged police inaction in an abduction-rape case in Dhaka passed off peacefully on Wednesday.

There was no untoward incident during the strike. People peacefully registered their protest. The shutdown on Wednesday was aimed at exerting pressure on the police to act fast.

A source said one Mohammad Shamim had allegedly kept the rape victim in confinement for about three years in Dhaka town of East Champaran and sexually assaulted her.

The victim was later recovered from a house on February 24 this year when the Dhaka police raided the house in search of a bike theft gang.

Shamim and his aides were involved in several cases of bike thefts. The main accused and his henchmen are yet to be arrested.

Dhaka is a sub-divisional headquarters town of Sikhrahana sub-division of East Champaran district, around 200km north of Patna.

Independent MLA Pawan Jaiswal and JDU state executive member Faisal Rahman extended support to the bandh, demanding the arrest of Shamim and others involved in the crime.

Asked about the latest development in the case, East Champaran superintendent of police (SP) Sunil Kumar told The Telegraph: "According to the court's directive, we have started the process to attach the property of the accused under Section 83 of CrPC."
