Patna, June 10: A first information report has been lodged against fraud accused Fazal Rahman, who, like stud farm owner Hasan Ali, procured a passport after giving a fake address of a locality in Patna but has now done a vanishing act.
Rahman procured a passport (No: G9351104) from Patna in 2008 after giving his permanent address in the Gulzarbagh area of Alamganj. The address turned out to be fake.
The Regional Passport Office here yesterday lodged an FIR against Rahman in the Kotwali police station.
“The matter came to light after a Mumbai-based person, Omkar Aria, lodged a complaint against Rahman and three others — Pradeep Kumar, Sheikh and Ramesh Bhai — accusing them of duping him of Rs 15 lakh and fleeing to Egypt. The complaint, however, does not provide details of the fraud. The case came to the passport office through the CBI, which during the course of its investigations, got information about the document,” a police officer told The Telegraph today.
Police sources said the CBI took up the case since the embezzlement alleged in the complaint by Aria was related to central funds.
Of the four men, Sheikh is known to be close to a Mumbai-based sister of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
“Sheikh is known to be close to her and the D-Company. He is known to visit her house often. Therefore, the police suspect Rahman too could have connections with the gangster,” another police officer said.
Patna police sources said Rahman is said to have around a dozen aliases — among them Sapan Sarkar and David.
Patna City superintendent Shivdeep Lande said the case would be investigated along the same lines as the Hasan Ali probe.
“The police have to investigate a lot of things. They have to find out the way in which he procured the passport, the procedure involved, whether he had applied for the passport under the Tatkal scheme, the police officers who were present at the time when the man got the passport, which person was handed the passport etc. If the passport was applied under the Tatkal service, there needs to be witnesses who will be searched for,” Lande said.
Earlier this year, it was found that stud farm owner Hasan Ali, at present in prison in Mumbai for money laundering worth crores, had got one of his passports from Patna in 1997 after providing a fake address.
