Political leaders stepped in on Sunday to mobilise support for “proper action” against a doctor accused of outraging the modesty of a woman.
Pappu Yadav, the MP from Madhepura who recently waged a virtual war against doctors in the Kosi region over the consultation fee they charge, reached here on Sunday and called upon the victim, a 22-year-old homemaker at Goshaidaspur locality in Bhagalpur, and demanded immediate arrest of Mritunjay Kumar and his associates.
Mritunjay is an associate professor with the surgery department at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JLNMCH) and the owner of a nursing home at Adampur locality here.
The woman registered complaint against Mritunjay and his associates with Adampur police station on October 31.
Pappu, accompanied by 150 and odd people, mostly the residents of Goshaidaspur, walked more than 10km from the woman’s house to the district magistrate’s residence for “ensuring justice” to the victim.
Pappu demanded immediate arrest of the doctor and also demanded for cancellation of his degree. He also lambasted the IMA for providing protection to the accused.
Yesterday, the IMA local chapter had threatened the district administration to withdraw the case against Mritunjay by Monday (November 3) otherwise all health services would be paralysed. “The IMA always favours such corrupt doctors. We will boycott IMA in Bihar,” said Pappu, while criticising the local Congress MLA, Ajit Sharma.
Sharma had to face an embarrassing situation at Goshaidaspur on Sunday morning when he had gone to meet the woman. Villagers alleged Sharma for showing favour to the accused doctor and did not allow him to meet the woman and her family members.
Neither Mritunjay nor any of his family members was available for comment.
JLNMCH superintendent R.C. Mandal said Mritunjay had gone on “long leave” from November 1.
Even after passing over more than two days, police so far have taken no action against the doctor and the his two staff despite the woman had registered an FIR with Adampur police station under sections of 354(A), 354 (B), 323, 341, 504, 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
On the other hand, one Pawan Kumar, an associate of the doctor, also registered another case against the victim’s husband along with 12 unknown people under sections of 341, 323, 504, 147, 427, 379, 384 of the IPC.
Vivek Kumar, senior superintendent of police, Bhagalpur, said Bina Kumari, City SP who earlier was asked for supervision in the case has been removed and additional SP Faroguddin has been assigned for conducting the supervision. “We are waiting for the supervision report and would take all appropriate action as per law. No guilty person would be spared,” Vivek said.
