Patna: The ordeal of the mother and daughter who were gang-raped in Gaya late on Wednesday has shaken up hardened police officers.
An investigating officer, who had to listen to the 15-year-old survivor recalling how she was assaulted, said his eyes were wet with tears. Initially, the family had said that the mother was raped while the daughter was molested. After much persuasion, the family admitted that the daughter was also raped.
"What happened with the family on the fateful night can't be described in words," said an IPS officer who spoke under cover of anonymity. "It is the most heinous incident that I have ever come across in my service as a police officer. It has shaken all the top police officials from within. The culprits will certainly be punished for the crime."
Deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), Magadh range, Vinay Kumar said that three persons - identified as Shivam Sharma, Gaurav Sharma and Dipak Paswan - have been arrested in the case and a few others detained for interrogation. While Shivam and Gaurav belong to Sondiha village, Dipak is from a neighbouring village called Mangalore.
The police have also approached the court to take two suspects on police remand for further questioning. A team from the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Patna visited the spot and collected evidences. The team also took the clothes of both the victims and the suspects for scientific investigation, the DIG said.
The police have set up three separate teams to investigate the case. "Each team has been assigned specific task to complete within the timeframe. SSP Rajeev Mishra is monitoring the investigation," Vinay said, adding that he also met the survivors.
The police will request the court to conduct speedy trial of the accused and the chargesheet will be filed within a timeframe, the DIG added.
Police sources said that two youths had stopped the motorcycle the family was travelling in and robbed the couple of cash and jewellery. After that, over a dozen men joined the two robbers, tied up the husband, and took turns to rape the mother and daughter.
Torment by leaders
The state women's commission has decided to slap notices on the RJD leaders who allegedly disclosed the identity of the rape survivors.
"The commission is going to issue notices to those involved in revealing the identity of the mother and daughter," said commission chairperson Dilmani Devi.
A video shot by RJD supporters and shared widely on social networking sites showed the party's fact-finding team members forcing the teenaged rape survivor out of a vehicle at Anugrah Narayan Medical College in Gaya where she was brought for medical examination on Friday.
An FIR has been filed against six RJD leaders
"The commission will leave no stone unturned to ensure that justice is done to the survivors. It will also see the real culprits were arrested and punished for the offence within a timeframe," Dilmani added.
DIG Vinay Kumar confirmed that the women's commission has sought an action taken report on the gang-rape incident. "We will send the report to the commission at the earliest," he told The Telegraph over phone on Saturday.
