Protest for AMU in state

Patna: Hundreds of members of Students Islamic Organisation of India on Tuesday protested the alleged neglect of the proposal to set up Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the state and marched from Patna Science College to Kargil Chowk. MU president Mohammed Islam said: “Other states like Kerala and Bengal have already inaugurated AMU. But the Bihar government is not serious about it. Chief minister Nitish Kumar had, however, slammed Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee for not providing enough funds for setting up the university.”

Award

Patna: College of Commerce political science assistant professor Indira Sinha has been selected for the Glory of India Award that is conferred by India International Friendship Society. Sinha will be presented the award at a programme in Bangkok on March 26.

Transfer

Patna: Girish Shanker, the principal secretary, science and technology department, will be relieved of his present duty on March 31. The 1982-batch IAS officer has been posted on central deputation as the joint secretary, Union consumer affairs, food and civil supplies ministry.

Accident

Patna/Purnea: A 10-year-old boy was killed and six others were injured when a jeep in which they were travelling overturned and fell into a ditch near Manas diara under Akhilpur police station in Patna Rural on Tuesday. The injured have been admitted to Danapur Sadar hospital for treatment. In another incident, a passenger vehicle en route from Katihar to Baisi fell off a bridge near Belgachhia under Dagarua police station on Tuesday evening. Of 25 people who had boarded it, 22 persons were seriously injured, while the condition of two persons was critical till reports last came in.

Sand policy

Patna: Chief minister Nitish Kumar said the state government would introduce a policy on sand mining. He made this announcement in the Assembly on Tuesday after several MLAs alleged irregular sand mining by contractors even at the cost of putting roads and bridges in danger.

Meet

Patna: Deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi held a high-level meet on Tuesday to stress the need to fulfil the conditions of the 13th Finance Commission to get the general performance grant of Rs 1,957 crore for local bodies in the state.

Minority

Patna: The Minority Welfare Association has petitioned the Patna district magistrate alleging that an official of the district animal husbandry department had constructed a room, platform and boundary wall in a Christian graveyard opposite Pirbhore police station.
