Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the new IIT campus in Bihta, around 40km west of Patna, on July 25.

IIT-Patna registrar Subhash Pandey said: "We have received a letter from the Union ministry of human resource development about the Prime Minister's participation in the inauguration."

The registrar added that the institute would send the inauguration ceremony details to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). As of now, the IIT-Patna inauguration ceremony will be for a maximum duration of one-and-a-half hours but the final schedule will be prepared by the PMO.

The Patna institute is one of the new IITs established by an act of Parliament on August 6, 2008. At present, it runs from its transit campus in Patliputra Colony, Patna. The IIT-Patna's new campus foundation at Amhara village was laid by former Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal and chief minister Nitish Kumar on April 19, 2011. Spread over an area of 500 acres, the new campus has state-of-the-art buildings with centrally located academic block with library.

The new campus has tutorial buildings, food court, administrative buildings, residential complex along with power substations. The shifting process of the main campus has started and the institute is going to start its next academic session from its Bihta campus.

The campus missed several deadlines for completion, as local farmers started agitation in the area for better compensation from time to time. Had there been smooth construction, the campus would be ready by last year.

However, an official of IIT Patna said political intervention solved the crisis to a great extent and construction was nearing completion.

The institute is also going to hold its third convocation from its Bihta campus on August 6. Boeing India president Pratyush Kumar has been invited as chief guest of this year's convocation function.

Modi will also launch the BJP's campaign for the Assembly elections in Muzaffarpur on July 25.
