Patna, May 6: Bihar Chapter of Indian Epilepsy Association and the neurology department of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) will jointly organise neurology update 2011 in the state capital on May 8.

After announcing it at a news meet in a city hotel today, organising secretary of the event, Dr Ashok Kumar said scientific deliberations on many common neurological disorders, with special emphasis on epilepsy, would be presented at the seminar.

He also said about 500 doctors would participate in the daylong scientific session, including many from metropolitan cities.

“Consultants, residents, students and other healthcare professionals from various specialties are expected to attend the conference. The basic idea behind this update is to disseminate the information from very basic to the most advanced developments to all concerned with the neurological care,” Ashok said.

Dr G.P. Sinha, a Patna-based neurosurgeon said luminaries in the field of neurology like Dr S.M. Katrak from Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai, would talk on tuberculosis meningitis.

“He will also elaborate how to diagnose and treat such cases. It will be immensely beneficial for hundreds of neurologists. Similarly, another eminent neurologist from Mumbai, Dr K. Ravishankar will discuss about chronic daily headache. As there will be greater stress on epilepsy management, Dr V.S. Saxena will deliver a scientific talk about guidelines for the management of the disease which is often goes untreated as it is attached with social stigma,” he said.

Organisers were of the view that there are misconceptions about neurological disorders and people often go for traditional therapists believing that these diseases are associated with religious experiences and even demonic possession.

“We want to make people aware that states like epilepsy are neurological disorders that can be cured or managed,” Sinha said.

Vidhan Parsihad chairman Tarakant Jha will inaugurate the event while Patna Saheb MP and actor Shatrughan Sinha will be chief guest at the occasion.
