Gaya, Jan. 7: Operations at the emergency and the outpatient departments of Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital (ANMCH) remained suspended today following a brawl between medics and Bhuin Toli residents last evening.

Neither a single patient was admitted in the emergency nor doctors reported for duty in the outpatient department today. Classes in the medical college also remained suspended.

The medics at the college had an altercation with local residents who allegedly damaged the northern boundary wall of the ANMCH campus. Thereafter, the residents pelted stones on the hostel, breaking windowpanes and injuring a few students. The boarders too retaliated to the attack.

Gaya Sadar sub-divisional officer (SDO) Paritosh Kumar and Gaya city deputy superintendent of police Rakesh Kumar arrived at the nugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital with forces and contained the situation.

“Anti-riot vehicle Vajra has been positioned on the campus to maintain peace,” the SDO said.

The students today locked the main gate, emergency gate and the medical college, demanding construction of concrete boundary wall on northern and western ends for protection.

Bhuin Toli is on the northern end of the campus, while a new colony has come up on its west. Residents of both the colonies use the hospital campus as a common passage.

ANMCH superintendent Sitaram Prasad said: “No fresh admission was made in the emergency and outpatient departments today. But doctors attended to 200 indoor patients. Talks have been held with the students to end the strike but they are adamant on their demand for safety. They are also demanding security from the district administration at the time of construction of the boundary wall.”

The Gaya Sadar SDO and the public works department (PWD) executive engineer also visited the hospital today. The SDO told The Telegraph that the PWD executive engineer has promised that the wall construction would start soon.
