CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Friday urged the Election Commission to take action against Amit Shah over his "fireworks in Pakistan" remark and accused both the BJP president and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of blatantly "patronising" communal forces in the country.
"What Amit Shah said was atrocious and it was a clear violation of model code of conduct. The Election Commission must take action against him. Both Modi and Shah have been patronising the communal forces in the country and also leading the campaign of communal polarisation," he said.
Addressing an election rally in East Champaran on Thursday, Shah had said if the BJP lost the Bihar elections, fireworks will go off in Pakistan. Yechury predicted a Delhi-election like debacle for the BJP in Bihar and said the top BJP leadership, including the Prime Minister had unleashed a vitriolic campaign in the ongoing Bihar election, which was an indication of desperation and frustration of the party.
Slamming Modi for his failure to take action against communal forces who had been spreading hatred leading to the growing intolerance in the country, Yechury said: "So far we have not got any assurance from the PM that the government will protect the democratic secular foundation of the country."
Referring to the returning of awards by scientists and writers against this rising intolerance in the country, he said: "These people do not have any political orientation and are enlightened minds of our country. But this government is not bothered at all."
The Left parties, he said, has launched countrywide protests against this government's economic policy, which has made life miserable for the poor in the country. Besides, the campaign against the communal forces by the Left is finding echo amongst people.
"The price of pulses, which is the staple diet of India, has skyrocketed but this government is not bothered at all. The Prime Minister is either busy travelling around the world or receiving foreign dignitaries."
