The government plans to set up model schools on the lines of Kendriya Vidyalaya in most blocks of the state.

Sources said Bihar Education Project Council director Rahul Singh would approach the Union human resource development ministry on August 14 with the plan to set up 275 model schools in educationally backward blocks under the provisions of Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan.

The Centre in 2011-12 had sanctioned 250 model schools in educationally backward blocks of the state. The state government now plans to set up 275 more such schools. The Union government and the state education department jointly fund the model schools under the secondary education scheme with the former bearing 75 per cent of the expenditure.

Singh said: “The state government plans to set up a model school in almost each of the 532 blocks. We have already received sanction for 250 model schools and if the Centre approves the proposal for 275 more model schools in the state, almost all the blocks will have such institutions.”

He will forward the state’s plea at the Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan project approval meeting scheduled in New Delhi on August 14.

The objective of opening these model schools is to provide better and quality education to students, particularly those in rural areas, to ensure they do not lag behind students from urban areas.

Sources said each of the model schools would come up on an area of five acres.

While the curriculum would match that of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, the model schools would also be equipped with modern facilities, including computer and science labs and good libraries. Students would be admitted through entrance examinations.
