First class judicial magistrate Shyamal Kumar, assigned to conduct a judicial inquiry into Munna Singh’s custodial death on July 1, assumed office on Thursday.

On July 3, Jamui district and sessions judge Jyoti Srivastava had ordered a judicial inquiry into Munna’s death in Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). The Jamui chief judicial magistrate, Dayalal Prasad, had assigned Shyamal for the probe and asked him to submit a report within a fortnight.

On July 2, the superintendent of Jamui district jail, Anil Kumar Mishra, had in a letter to Prasad alleged third degree torture by the police and the subsequent death of the accused. Jitendar Rana, a 2005-batch IPS officer, who has taken over as the Jamui superintendent of police (SP), said a speedy trial would be conducted. He said a special team has been constituted to arrest the accused — station house officers Jitendra Kumar and Satyavrat Bharti of Jamui Town and Giddhaur police stations, respectively, and then Jamui SP Barnawal’s bodyguard.

“The team has started raiding different places and we are establishing contact with the police of the home districts of the accused,” he said.
