The excise department has sought help from central forces to check liquor smuggling in the bordering areas of north Bihar, including the Nepal border.
The department has requested Sanjay Kumar, deputy inspector-general of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), to help enforce prohibition in the state. Sanjay said he has directed security personnel fighting Naxalites to keep a close watch on liquor smuggling as well.
The SSB has recently set up several camps in Motihari, Bettiah, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhubani, Supaul, Kishanganj and Purnea districts.
Muzaffarpur district magistrate Dharmendra Kumar said liquor could easily be smuggled from the bordering areas, and required close monitoring.
The department's enforcement team will regularly check inter-state buses and trains to ensure liquor is not snuffed into the state.
Motihari district magistrate Anupam Kumar told The Telegraph that he has urged SSB personnel to keep a tab on pedestrians who travel to and from Nepal.
Security personnel are constantly manning the check posts to ensure even raw materials that are used to make illicit liquor are not brought in the state.
The excise team has been seizing huge amounts of liquor every day.
The team arrested a person and seized 35 cartons of liquor from a shop under the jurisdiction of Aurai police station last night.
Excise superintendent Amit Kumar said 14 people have been arrested so far for selling liquor after prohibition was enforced in the state.
The excise department is planning to file charge-sheets against all such shopkeepers to send a strong message to the illicit traders.
Dharmendra said he would urge the district court to ensure speedy trials of all cases related to illicit liquor trading.
