I-T dept ends Srijan raids

Income-tax (I-T) department finally concluded marathon raids at houses and other establishments of suspected Srijan beneficiaries on Saturday morning with an additional team from Patna calculating value of the property and assets of those who were under the I-T department's radar.

Bhagalpur: Income-tax (I-T) department finally concluded marathon raids at houses and other establishments of suspected Srijan beneficiaries on Saturday morning with an additional team from Patna calculating value of the property and assets of those who were under the I-T department's radar.

I-T officials assembled here from different parts of Bihar and Jharkhand and also approached banks to verify the accounts and lockers of suspected Srijan beneficiaries.

A senior I-T officer speaking on condition of anonymity said many passbooks and keys of bank lockers were found during the raids. "We asked the banks concerned to provide us statement of accounts so that a proper assessment is possible," the officer said on the condition of anonymity. Many banks refused such demands from the I-T team.

The CBI had earlier made LJP leader Dipak Vema's wife Rajrani Verma and expelled BJP leader Bipin Sharma's wife Soni Sharma named accused in the cases since they were office-bearers of Srijan Mahila Vikas Sahayog Samity.

Apart from that, suspected beneficiaries like Dipak Verma, Bipin Sharma, P.K. Ghosh, Kishore Ghosh and M.V. Raju, were on the SIT radar. The CBI interrogated all the persons several times at it's Sabour camp office.

During its raids, the I-T team failed to find M.V. Raju, a former businessman who was very close to Srijan founder, the late Manorama Devi. Raju a resident of Odisha, reportedly disposed of his property, including business establishments, and managed to leave Bhagalpur dramatically. The name of Pawan Meheria, a businessman here, has been added as the I-T authorities raided his shops and house.
