Banka: The district police are collecting details of assets amassed by don-turned politician Sanjay Yadav, who surrendered in a local court on Monday and is in judicial custody. Yadav, a former RJD MLA, is wanted by the police in multiple criminal cases.
Banka superintendent of police (SP) Chandan Kushwaha, who has been monitoring the drive to ultimately attach the ill-gotten properties of Yadav, said officials were told to fish out details.
The last case in which the RJD leader is wanted by the police relates to allegedly beating up and demanding extortion money from Indian Oil employees who were inspecting an LPG gas bottling plant at Dhaka Mor, his native place in Banka, on May 21 last year.
The Indian Oil employees had alleged that the police had initially refused to register their complaint against the local leader.
Santosh Kumar Singh, proprietor of the company assigned for the work at the plant, approached Vikash Vaibhav, deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), Bhagalpur range. After the intervention of the DIG, an FIR was lodged against Yadav and four other persons.
Soon after the FIR was registered against Yadav, many people started writing anonymously to DIG Vaibhav, disclosing the huge properties and assets accumulated by Yadav mainly in Banka, Bhagalpur and Patna in Bihar and Godda, Deoghar, Sahebganj and Ranchi at Jharkhand.
On the basis of the tip-offs, the district magistrates concerned were asked to give details of such properties of Yadav.
"We have the reports from the district magistrates with the lists of such properties," said DIG Vaibhav. "The Banka SP has received the district-wise lists of such properties of Sanjay Yadav. Now we are verifying the details of the properties with income tax returns to find out whether Sanjay Yadav accumulated the properties legally or not."
After reviewing the details, departments concerned, such as income tax and the police's economic offences unit would be intimidated.
"The case might be handed over to the Enforcement Directorate if required," Vaibhav added.
Police sources said Yadav and his family members own huge properties, including a stone-crushing plant in Sahebganj, lease for quarrying the hills, and dozens of valuable trucks and other vehicles required in mining and transportation of stones.
"The influential RJD leader 'managed' the police particularly at Banka and Godda and virtually created a reign of terror," said a local resident. "Soon after Sanjay Yadav was sent to jail, his henchmen forcefully collected money from vehicles passing through Dhaka Mor."
