Two bike-borne criminals gunned down a fish trader on Saidpur Canal Road in the Kadamkuan area on Sunday, the third murder to shock the city in five days.

Satish Sahni (34) was intercepted and shot dead by the assailants around 5am when he was going to the traders’ hub at Saidpur on his bicycle.

Police said the criminals did not take away the money and the cellphone the victim was carrying. Station house officer (SHO) of Kadamkuan police station Sanjay Kumar said: “Two youths on a motorcycle fired at Sahni and fled the spot. The deceased used to stay near Baba Chowk at Patel Nagar with his brother Kanhaiya Sahni.”

Satish used to visit the trade hub everyday to buy fish, the officer said, adding that prima facie it appeared that he was murdered because of personal enmity.

The police found Rs 3,200 and a mobile phone on Satish’s body. “The call details of his mobile phone have been sought to ascertain if the assailants had contacted him,” the SHO added.

Satish’s brother Kanhaiya said: “He had come to the city from our native village, Rahimpur, in Khagaria district recently and did not have any enmity in Patna.”

The murder of the fish trader has, once again, exposed the lack of security in the capital. A 25-year-old youth, Binay Singh, was shot dead by criminals near Panchmukhiya Hanuman temple on Boring Canal Road under Kadamkuan police station on the night of February 12.

The victim, a native of East Champaran district, was living in the Pahalwan Ghat area and preparing for competitive examinations. The police, however, claimed that the deceased had criminal antecedents and his murder was a fall-out of gang rivalry. Nobody has been arrested so far. Around 1am on February 13, a daily wage earner, Raju Razak, was shot dead inside his house in the Kadamkuan area. Two persons — Ravi and Tinku — were arrested for their alleged involvement in Razak’s murder.

Patna City superintendent of police Jayant Kant said all the three cases would be solved soon.
