The state has notified the revised fare structure for three-wheelers for the first time in the 21st century after over two decades.

The new tariff was notified on February 14 following approval from the governor. Officially, they are effective now. But the new fares would be practically followed after point-to-point fare charts are ready.

The government also published the proposed revised fares for taxis on February 15, inviting objections/suggestions from respective stakeholders.

Transport minister Brishen Patel told The Telegraph on Friday: “The fares of autorickshaws, tempos and taxis were not revised after 1992. But the prices of fuel have increased manifold. So, the department revised the fares factoring in the capital investment, operations, maintenance, profits and public welfare. The revised fares for autorickshaws, tempos and similar public transport vehicles were notified on February 14 upon approval from the governor.”

He said the regional transport authorities had been asked to fix the “point-to-point” fares for each area based on the notified fare structure at the earliest. The notification prescribes compulsory display of the “point-to-point” fare chart inside all public transport vehicles.

The “point-to-point” fares would be in the nearest round figure. If the calculated fare from one point to another is Rs 2.50, the effective fare would be Rs 3. But if the fare calculated is Rs 2.25, commuters would have to pay Rs 2. Besides sparing the commuters the hassle of negotiating the fare, the notification of the revised tariff is aimed at stopping the practice of overloading.
