Patna, May 11: An FIR was lodged against the manager of a private bank in Sheikhpura district for dishonouring the cheque of the widow of CRPF jawan Ranjeet Kumar, killed during a Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district last month.
A press release issued by the information and public relations department on Thursday said the case was lodged with Sheikhpura town police station on Wednesday after it came to the fore that the bank had not honoured a cheque worth Rs 5 lakh that the Sheikhpura district magistrate handed over to the slain cop's widow.
The press release said the account in the name of the Sheikhpura district magistrate had a deposit of Rs 1.5 crore and yet the bank failed to honour the cheque. "It's negligence on the part of the bank and not the state government," the release said.
The operation of the account in the name of the district magistrate has been ceased with immediate effect. Also, instructions had been issued to blacklist the bank for any government transaction in the district, the release said.
On Wednesday, the bank manager had apologised for the gaffe and told the district magistrate the amount couldn't be transferred because of discrepancies in matching the signature of the cheque issuing authority. It was later transferred through RTGS (real time gross settlement).
