The body of a woman, a resident of Nawada who allegedly committed suicide after being tortured for dowry by her in-laws, was found on Tuesday in the mortuary of a Gaya hospital with an eyeball gouged out.
Puja, 24, was found hanging from the ceiling at her in-laws’ house at Tarwan village in the Wazirganj area on Monday evening.
Sources said police took her body to the mortuary of Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital (ANMCH) for post-mortem and kept it in the mortuary of the health hub.
However, when the body was brought out of the mortuary on Tuesday morning, her relatives and friends were shocked to find one of the eyeballs gouged out and started creating a ruckus on the hospital campus.
Gaya (city) superintendent of police Babu Ram rushed to the hospital and pacified the agitating people. “The autopsy report can only reveal how her eye was gouged out,” he said.
The officer, however, did not rule out the possibility of rats nibbling the eye of the woman. He also expressed unhappiness with the inadequate facilities at the mortuary of the hospital.
ANMCH authorities refused to comment on the issue, arguing that the police could say how the incident occurred because they had kept the body in the mortuary.
Puja’s brother, Gopal, has lodged a case of dowry death with the Wazirganj police station. He alleged that his sister was tortured by her in-laws for months together.
A resident of Moksama village in Nawada district, Puja had got married to Vinod Baranwal of Tarwan village under Wazirganj police station area last year. Gopal named Vinod and his parents accused in the case. All of them are on the run.
