One Khalique (27) was arrested and sent to Khudiram Bose Central Jail on Sunday afternoon for masterminding a plot to extort money from doctors.

Two Barhampura doctors, Tarun Kumar and Anzar Alam, had received extortion calls from Khalique, who allegedly asked them to pay or face consequences.

On receiving complaints, Barhampura police on June 9 put the cellphone numbers on surveillance. Senior superintendent of police Ranjit Kumar Mishra said Khalique was arrested on Saturday evening from Jhapha village.

Khalique used a SIM card issued in the name of Shila Ben, a resident of Sahelia village of Rajkot in Gujarat. Khalique, a mechanic, had stayed in Gujarat for several years and returned to Raghopur this year. The police interrogated Khalique, who named Murtuza, another youth of his village, as his accomplice.
