Patna: Despite her illness which caused her to skip her pre-board exams, city girl Kinjal has come out with flying colours in ICSE exam results announced on Monday.

Jethuli of St Joseph's Convent High School scored 95.2 per cent. According to Kinjal's family, she was suffering from an undiagnosed health condition that made her consult doctors even during the exams. Her condition was such she had to be taken to a doctor's clinic twice during the exam.

"My daughter started experiencing a type of burning pain around her navel, which went around her waist two months before the exam. We consulted several doctors but none could diagnose her condition. She was even admitted to a hospital for four days at a private hospital, which also couldn't diagnose her problem," said Kinjal's mother Anjala Krishna over phone from Delhi. "While some doctors feared that our daughter was suffering from a rare diverticular disease (in which loops are formed in the small intestine), some said she was suffering from an intestinal infection. Some others suspected she might be suffering because of gravel in her gut, but none of them was sure. She wrote the exam such a condition. We are proud of what she has achieved but all of us, including Kinjal, expected even better results." Anjala said they will apply for re-evaluation, as they find it hard for believe Kinjal scored just 95.2 per cent.

For now, Kinja is undergoing treatment at Gurgaon-based Paras Hospital. Earlier, she was taken to Fortis, another super-speciality hospital.

Kinjal's teachers are also proud of her. Supta Chatterjee, English teacher at her school, said: "We (teachers) had lost hope she would sit in the exam because she had also missed out her pre-board. It must have been difficult for her to prepare in such poor health conditions, but she has proved the old adage - where there's a will, there's a way," said Supta.

Harshit Raj from Christ Church High School scored 94 per cent despite suffering from dengue a month before the exam. "Harshit's platelet count had reached 50,000. He was admitted to a private hospital for six days," Harshit's mother Rekha Kumari, a resident of Kadamkuan, said. "Later when we brought him home, he was bed-ridden. "He would cry a lot for not being able to concentrate on his studies. He used to complain about headache and weakness. But even in that condition he managed to study for 3-4 hours every night. Even when three papers were left, he was suffering from 105 degrees fever."

He is already charting the course ahead. "He is such a bibliophile, he asked me for IIT-JEE preparatory books as a gift. Not for him a bike, watch or other gadgets," smiled Rekha. Harshit said there was reason for double celebrations on Monday because it was also his birthday. "My mother treated me to handmade kheer, which she makes the best," Harshit said.

For Kunal Kumar and Kaushal Raj Kumar, students of Jesus & Mary Academy in Patna City, lack of the basic facilities at their home did not deter them from excelling in the exam. While Kunal, the son of priest, scored 72.42 per cent in the ICSE board exam, Kaushal, the son of a farmer, has scored 72 per cent.

The director of Jesus & Mary Academy, Abhishek Patrick, praised both students. "There are students from our school who have scored more than 90 per cent in the exam but these two student's achievements don't fall short of them in any manner," he said.
