Patna, Feb. 9: In what could be termed as a shameful act for a securityman assigned the role of guarding common people, a CRPF jawan shot a national-level kabaddi player to death before shooting himself after the girl resisted his advances here today.

The incident occurred in front of Moinul Haque Stadium at Rajender Nagar under Kadamkuan police station around 6.45pm.

According to police, Yashwant Singh, a jawan with the 123rd battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force, under the influence of alcohol had asked for the cell phone number of 22-year-old Manisha Devi, who was practising at the stadium.

Employed as a clerk in the divisional railway manager’s office in Danapur, the girl was set to leave for Ranchi tomorrow for the National Games starting February 12. Manisha’s father, Yash Pal Thakur, is a native of Jhalwari in Shimla district.

Police sources said the jawan fired 17 rounds from his AK-47 assault rifle after Manisha snubbed him.

Since Singh fired indiscriminately, one Kedar Prasad, a resident of the area who was walking near the place of incident, also received bullet injuries. Manisha and Prasad were taken to Rajeshwar Hospital at Rajender Nagar, where the girl succumbed to the bullet injuries an hour later.

Patna City superintendent of police, Manu Maharaj said Manisha stayed at Railway Colony at Rajender Nagar with a few more girls.

Police officers at the site of the incident said it appeared to be a case of eve-teasing.

“There is a base camp at the 123rd battalion of the CRPF in the same locality near the stadium. The girl was practising at Moinul Haque and around 6.30pm when she was on her way out, Yashwant stopped her. The incident occurred in the stadium,” an officer of the Kadamkuan police station said.

“The man asked for the mobile number of the girl. When Manisha refused, the jawan, who was in an inebriated state, got furious and it led to a heated argument between the duo. A little while later, the jawan opened fire at the girl. Though a post-mortem is being conducted, Manisha might have sustained at least two bullet injuries,” the officer said, adding Singh did not stop after firing Manisha. “He went on firing and bullets also hit Prasad, an elderly person, who was nearby,” he said.

The officer said: “After firing at Manisha and Prasad, Singh turned the rifle barrel and shot himself. Singh is said to have sustained five bullet injuries. He was taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital where his condition is said to be critical.”

The City SP said: “The condition of the jawan is critical. We will be talking to his colleagues. The matter needs a thorough probe.”
