For Nalanda University vice-chancellor Gopa Sabharwal, Friday was a special day. Visibly tired after a day’s hard work, she took time out to share with The Telegraph her feelings after the orientation programme of the university, the future roadmap of the varsity and her expectations from students. Excerpts:
How do you feel after successfully launching Nalanda University?
It’s like a dream coming true. For two years, we have been working hard for this. I used to start my day at 5am whenever I visited this place. My morning walk destination used to be the campus of the university.
Where do we go from here?
We shall focus on concept study. We shall aspire for quality education and research. We are planning to launch at least two more schools.
What is the final figure of students?
As of now, 15 students are with us.
Any plan to fill up the vacant seats?
Yes, we are screening a few. Also, some students will take time in joining us because they are working. They have to fulfil their professional commitments like serving notice period before joining the course.
How many faculty members are on board?
At present, there are five faculty members. By September 1, the day our classes start, there will be 11 teachers.
Are you satisfied with the kind of response you have received so far?
Yes, of course. We have students from across the globe. We are blessed with high-class faculty members.
What is your message to the first batch of students?
Work hard. Meet people around, exchange ideas and enrich yourself.
Where do you see them two years down the line?
Look, our focus is on in-depth knowledge. I would like to see them as people with a clear concept of their subject.
Which was the biggest challenge on the way of launching Nalanda University?
There were some obstacles and a few frustrating moments, but it’s better to forget them on a day like this and move on.
Are you satisfied with the co-operation from the central government and the state?
Yes. This university has got support from everyone. Even leaders having affiliation to different parties jointly supported its cause in Parliament.
How will Nalanda University help change the face of Rajgir?
The vision of this university is different from others. We want our students to mingle with the people in the neighbourhood. That way, there will be exchange of thoughts. One can’t be selfish and acquire knowledge. Besides, there will be natural growth of Rajgir around this institution, as it happens elsewhere.
Last but not the least, when will the students get to see their chancellor Amartya Sen?
He is expected to be in India in December and we are planning a board meeting in February. In all likelihood, he will meet the Nalanda University students either this year-end or early next year.
